Jan 28-Feb 2: Compagnie Herve KOUBI at The Joyce
Compagnie Hervé KOUBI brings their breathtaking performance, What The Day Owes To The Night to the stage! This gravity-defying work fuses capoeira, martial arts, and contemporary dance into a mesmerizing experience you won’t forget.
Inspired by Algerian author Yasmina Khadra’s novel, the piece follows choreographer Hervé Koubi’s journey of discovering his Algerian roots. After uncovering his family’s history, Koubi traveled back to Algeria to collaborate with street dancers from across the Mediterranean.
Jan 9-13: Works & Process Underground Uptown Dance Festival at Guggenheim
It sounds like an incredible lineup of dance performances and events celebrating New York City’s rich dance traditions at the Guggenheim. From hip-hop and Afro-Latin rhythms to contemporary choreography and ballroom battles, each night promises a unique experience blending history, culture, and artistry.
The programming highlights various communities and genres, from KR3TS’ exploration of human experiences through dance to Afro Latin Soul’s homage to mambo. The inclusion of improvisation-based experiences like LayeRhythm and waacking battles with Princess Lockerooo adds an interactive and playful dimension to the events.
Jan 9-15: Winter Jazzfest…all over NYC
My annual January gambol through the freezing streets of New York in search of JAZZ! This is a phenomenal festival, and I love that it’s packed with so much juicy programming during a month where there isn’t much going on. A few highlights include…
☆ Jan 9: Aja Monet at Le Poisson Rouge [Tickets Here] - Aja Monet is a Grammy-nominated Surrealist Blues Poet whose artistry has been called “spellbinding” and “revolutionary.” Known for her groundbreaking debut album, when the poems do what they do, she blends poetry and music in a way that transcends traditional boundaries, weaving together raw emotion, history, and deep social consciousness.
☆ Jan 10: Manhattan Marathon Night…ALL OVER MANHATTAN! [Passes Here]
☆ Jan 11: Brooklyn Marathon Night…ALL OVER BROOKLYN [Passes Here]
This is the best part! Winter Jazzfest’s signature two-night, multi-venue experience allows you access to over 40 different groups playing from early evening through late at night. Artists include Arooj Aftab, Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn, Keyon Herold, Lion Babe, Makaya McCraven, and MANY MORE!
☆ Jan 15: Ganavya Reimagines ‘Les Filles de Illighadad’ at Roulette [Tickets Here] - For this Take Two, Ganavya chose to reimagine the album Les Filles de Illighadad. The album was recorded informally, including village songs but with a guitar and calabash: Fatou Seidi Ghali is the first woman to play Tuareg-style guitar, and there’s a meditative nature to the album without losing the playfulness that the sense of village has.
Jan 16: The Flying Cloud Revue, a collaborative benefit show in the round at Le Poisson Rouge
From the mind of Sam Evian, artist (music is dreamy, lush, atmospheric, groovy, mellow, etc.), label founder, and studio wizard, comes The Flying Cloud Review. Tons of amazing artists will be performing, like Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead), Liam Kazar, Palehound, and MORE. Proceeds from this show will go directly to Tunefork Studios and Beirut Synth Center, who are coordinating a relief effort to provide urgent essential supplies—including mattresses, pillows, blankets, clothes, and hygiene kits—to displaced individuals in and around Beirut
