SEPTEMBER SELECTS
It's really all about DANCE this September with some bit hitters. Some lovely music too. Both are good, really, if you're asking.
Sept 5-12: R.O.S.E | Sharon EYAL, Gai BEHUR, YOUNG, Ben UFO at the Park Avenue Amory
Award-winning choreographer Sharon Eyal, known for her mesmerizing and boundary-pushing dance work, teams up with her creative partner Gai Behar, a visionary from the underground club scene, and Caius Pawson from London's Young to bring a fresh performance to North America. This piece blends the energy of club culture with modern dance, showcasing a mix of dark hedonism, futuristic vibes, and hypnotic repetition.
Iconic DJ Ben UFO sets the mood with a soundtrack that fuels both the dancers and the audience. The show blurs the lines between performer and spectator, inviting everyone to dance and experience the art up close. Whether you're a club regular or a dance enthusiast, this event offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in a world where dance and nightlife collide.
Sept 18-29: Fall for Dance Festival at City Center
$30 tickets to see dance? Yes, please! The Fall for Dance Festival is back at City Center for its 21st season, serving up a smorgasbord of dance from around the world for over 22,000 fans. This year’s lineup is packed with five diverse programs featuring A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, GALLIM, Gandini Juggling, M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Sara Mearns, and more. There are some free pre-show dance lessons if you’re feeling up for it.
Sept 12: A.I.M by Kyle Abraham: CASSETTE VOL. 1 at Montclair State
A.I.M by Kyle Abraham is back with a new premiere, CASSETTE VOL. 1, celebrating the music of the 1980s and early '90s - you know you’ll be singing along. Set to the soundtrack of the decade, the dancers bring to life the ways pop music shapes society into a shared experience. Drawing on the movement styles of postmodern icons like Trisha Brown and the evolution of queer culture in the '80s, Abraham crafts an electrifying evening that pays tribute to nostalgia and camp.
Sept 3-8: Shabaka w/ Special Guests at Blue Note
King Shabaka is in from Londontown, mate. He will be joined by special guests like harpist / goddess Brandee Younger, Charles Overton, and George Burton. Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge its Grace is one monster of an album and one my favorites of the year.
Sept 7-8: Bushwig 13 feat. Peaches at Knockdown Center
The one, the only, BUSHWIG!! Year #13 of this incredible celebration of drag includes performances by Peaches, Ms. Nina, Kennedy Davenport, Augustus Mueller, Rosa Perreo, Dawn, Amanda Tori Meating, Megami, Hunami Muse, The Girlfriend Experience, and New York’s own Julie J.
Sept 16-19: BADBADNOTGOOD at Blue Note
This band seems to never really play gigs so I was really excited to see them doing a BN residency. Their new album features 18 songs and goes back to their instrumental roots. This Toronto-based jazz ensemble straddles 70’s era soul + jazz, alt hip-hop, and experimental electronica. Maybe some fun guests will join on stage?
Sept 20: Lion Babe at Elsewhere
Lion Babe, very New York, very cutesy. After a bit of a hiatus, this duo is back with an EP that feels very club. This show should be one big party.
Sept 30: Beverly Glenn-Copeland at Pioneer Works
The Salon Evening is a program that will feature performances by legendary Beverly Glenn-Copeland with an assortment of different collaborations from the artist's friends and family, including Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland and special guests to be announced. If you’ve never seen Beverly, it’s a special experience and one not to miss.
Sept 12: KISS MY FACE at 3 Dollar Bill
NYC’s dance community takes over 3DB. An unhinged dance variety show that merges club culture and performance art. Come play.
